People frequently ask me which of my own paintings are my favorite(s).

The Light, Sharing the Song, and One Voice for Children

“The Light” . . .  Of the many, many thoughts and influences that are a part of this painting (and the subsequent, signed reproductions), the most prominent and obvious is the visual metaphor of “the light” for our Creator, for all that is lightness, goodness and love. It’s even more symbolic of goodness because in our culture we are so aware of its opposite: darkness/the absence of light, bedtime fears, even “The Prince of Darkness”.

There are several figures pointing the way to The Light. Some people see these translucent, floating/flying figures that are often found in my work as angels. Some see them as prophets; some say they are ghosts. To me, they are souls or spirits. However, I’m aware that many artists are often tuned into a more universal consciousness, using symbols that have a wider meaning than that of which we’re aware at the time we’re painting, writing, or composing.

We know that, scientifically, the color white is what we see when all the colors are reflected back to us from an object, so white is all of the colors together. It takes all of the colors to produce this complete, white light. A spectrum can show us the rainbow that is contained in light. Within The Light –as pictured in this painting (or print)—you may see the subtle colors of the rainbow. In all our diversity, in all of our colors and differences, we are each unique; yet it takes all of us to become the one Light.

The souls are pointing to The Light, a white glow with a hint of a rainbow, surrounded by swirling mists of darkness.  The souls are all pointing to the same place to show that even with all of our unique differences, we all share the same journey, the same goals, and are more alike than we are different.

In “Sharing the Song”, a multitude of souls is pictured, fading out infinitely. For me spirit/spirits have neither gender nor race, so adornments, hair, facial features, and body or physical characteristics are ambiguous and varied. All of the happy faces have open, singing mouths, and are united by the single, superimposed, open-mouthed silhouette, which symbolizes they are “Sharing the Song”.

“One Voice for Children” . . .was created after “Sharing the Song”, specifically to be used as a poster for a national group, that used to be called Southern Association for Children Under Six. Oklahoma was hosting the national convention that year. In this print, Mother Earth is hugging herself (a sign of high self-esteem and a symbol of love for those she embraces), as she also hugs a group of children that represents all races and cultures of the planet. Holding hands, they extend out into the universe. With open mouths, they sing the same song, sharing the “One Voice for Children”. The one voice is represented by a child’s open-mouthed face, superimposed over the Earth.

Although all three of these original paintings have sold, they are each available as SIGNED reproductions, lithographically reproduced (not as fine art, multiple-original lithographs, however) on heavy, coated paper. The Light is approximately 21″x 14″. Sharing the Song is 27″x 21″. One Voice for Children is approximately 25″x 21″. Each is 30 dollars (plus tax).
