Every picture tells a story…

I’m a painter, printmaker, writer, and teacher who primarily uses watercolor to explore love, spirituality, and feminine archetypes. I am an active seeker, on the journey of a mystic, using my art as a tool of meditation and contemplation. Most of my work is ethereal, dreamy and narrative. Even though I can’t remember a time when I was not making art, I’ve been selling and exhibiting paintings since 1969. My art continues to reflect my journey and growth as I attempt to make connections and gain understandings. Dreams, studies, and explorations of love, motherhood, peace, nature/animals, women’s issues, native peoples, myths, religions and spirituality are my favorite subjects. I’ve always been intrigued by dreams and dreams of flying; many of my works picture flying people, as well as birds and winged insects.

My favorite medium is usually whatever is in my hands, although I’m comfortable with oils, acrylics, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and artists books; but through the years, I’ve especially grown to love watercolor. It easily lends itself to the dreamlike quality of my work and subjects, and comfortably tells my stories.”

Every picture tells a story. . . (Love the title of Rod Stewart’s 1971 song and album!)

I also write essays on art, life in general, and specific anecdotes/memories of my own life; I write and illustrate children’s picture books. I plan to write, and/or share my previously-written essays, twice a month -the 1st and 15th (there or about)- in my blog, about many of the same themes as my visual art...although I have yet to make this into a habit.

My primary reason for making art…

“I particularly appreciate this Edgar Degas quote: ‘A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, and some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain, you end up boring people.’ I agree, yet additionally, I’m always so happy when something about my work touches a person, that I’m more than willing to share my inspirations and visions.

My primary reason for making art (other than that’s just what I do and have always done) is a search for meaning, but also very special to me is the beautiful aspect of being able to touch others… to show them new ways of looking, to help them experience new or forgotten emotions, to remind both myself and the viewer that we have souls, and to present to others their own opportunities for awakening… as I share my own discoveries and personal epiphanies through my art.”
